Em uma conversa com o cônsul-geral dos EUA em São Paulo, Christopher J McMullen, em 9 de janeiro de 2006, o vice-presidente Michel Temer afirmou que o desempenho do então presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva no cargo era decepcionante.
Segundo telegrama obtido pelo site Wikileaks, a situação oferecia uma oportunidade para o PMDB lançar se próprio candidato.
"Temer criticou a visão estreita de Lula e seu excessivo foco nos programas de seguridade social que não promovem o crescimento ou desenvolvimento econômico", afirma McMullen no despacho.
O então deputado peemedebista também classificou como fraude o governo petista.
Ele ainda relatou a desilusão popular causada pelo "roubo de dinheiro público" que teria sido feito por líderes do PT.
De acordo com Temer, a intenção dos petistas não era ter um ganho pessoal, mas aumentar o poder político do partido.
Temer disse ao cônsul que a decisão sobre do PMDB dependeria do desempenho de Lula nas pesquisas. Ele cita como possíveis candidatos Anthony Garotinho, Germano Rigotto e Nelson Jobim.
O vice-presidente lembrou que o partido esteve com o tucano José Serra em 2002.
Em 2006, o PMDB só formalizou o apoio a Lula no segundo turno.
